How Liquid Filling Machines for Food & Beverage Work

Specifically for beverages, there are two different types of liquid filling machines–aseptic and non-aseptic.

Aseptic bottle filling machines are used for shelf-stable beverages that don’t need to be refrigerated or have preservatives. This can include plant-based beverages, iced tea and coffee drinks and sports drinks.

These machines sterilize the beverage, the packaging itself and then fill in sterile environment to avoid contamination.

Non-aseptic liquid filling systems for beverages are used for beverages that have already been pasteurized or contain preservatives. This includes carbonated drinks, juice, bottled water and alcohol.

Like other types of liquid filling machines, the ones specifically for beverages can fill a wide range of containers, but cans are one of the most common types, including:

  • Beer can filling machines
  • Juice can filling machines
  • Soda can filling machines

When it comes to food, liquid filling machines can handle many different viscosities:

  • Free-flowing, or low viscosity: oils and sauces
  • Thicker, or medium viscosity: honey, syrup, salad dressing, condiments
  • Thickest, or high-viscosity: peanut butter, jelly, pasta sauce
  • Specialty: hot-filled liquids that require sterilization, liquids with solid pieces like salsa or relish

Whether food or beverage, these machines can fill a wide range of plastic, glass and metal containers:

  • Bottles
  • Jars
  • Cans
  • Pouches
  • Tubs
  • Cups
  • Trays
  • Pails for bulk food products

Types of Liquid Filling Machines for Food & Beverage

Four types of filling machines are most commonly used in the food and beverage industry: gravity, volumetric, servo-fill and mass-flow. The right solution for you depends on how precise you need your fills to be, how fast you need your line to run and if your operations require frequent change-overs. Regardless of which type you need, food-grade liquid filling machines are made from stainless steel to ensure food safety and easy cleaning-in-place.

Gravity

Need an affordable filling method for lower-cost liquids like water or other non-viscous beverages? Gravity filling machines are a great option, and here are just a couple of the many benefits they offer:

  • Uses gravity to dispense liquid into containers.
  • Suitable for high-volume, low-cost products where accuracy is less critical and giveaway costs are minimal.
  • Most affordable filling option.

Volumetric

When you need reliable, volume-based accuracy for thicker viscosities like honey, sauces and cooking oils, volumetric fillers are a great choice. Here are just a few of the benefits they provide:

  • Use a piston to measure and dispense liquid, which ensures a consistent fill every time.
  • Suitable for a wide range of viscosities.
  • Recommended when accuracy and volume matter but not at the level required for more expensive products.

Servo-Fill

When your product demands the highest level of precision, servo-filling machines provide the ultimate solution. Here are a couple of their key benefits:

  • Driven by a servo motor, which ensures pinpoint accuracy for filling based on volume.
  • Suitable for both thin and viscous liquids, such as juices, sauces and other liquid food products that require a high level of precision.
  • Operate at a higher throughput than a piston filler.
  • Provide faster change-over time between product formats.

Mass-Flow

Whether you’re dealing with large-volume containers, smaller fill volumes by weight or higher-viscosity foods, mass-flow filling systems are a smart choice. Here’s why:

  • Uses a high-precision Coriolis meter, which fills by weight instead of volume.
  • Fluids don’t pass through pistons or pumps, making cleanout faster.
  • Ideal for difficult products, such as those easily damaged by agitation, sticky or hard to clean-in-place.
