What Is a Jib Crane?

A jib crane has a horizontal boom that supports a movable hoist that moves in a circular or semi-circular motion. These cranes are usually fixed to the wall or a floor-mounted pillar, but some types are portable.

Our engineers recommend using a jib crane when:

  • You need to lift less than 1 ton.
  • Your industry involves specific, repeatable tasks.
  • Your footprint is under 16 feet.
  • You’re looking for a less expensive lifting option.
  • Your ceiling or flooring has a lower weight capacity.

There are different types of jib cranes. The type that’s right for your application depends on your needs.

  • Wall-mounted jib crane— Also known as a column-mounted jib crane, this style provides the most clearance, making it useful if you have overhead obstructions.
  • Portable jib crane—This style offers the most flexibility, since you can move it out of the way when you’re done using it.
  • Floor-mounted jib crane—Recommended for tight spaces or for supplementing other overhead cranes. Can also be used outdoors.
  • Articulating jib crane—Offers the most rotation, making it easier to reach around a corner or into a machine. They can also move smoothly around obstructions and columns.

Three Benefits of Gantry Cranes

Using overhead cranes in your facilities can reduce lifting-related injuries. These injuries account for nearly a quarter of all worker compensation claims, according to FMP Global, with an average compensation of $24,000.

Not only do gantry cranes keep your employees safer, but they’ll also ultimately protect your bottom line.

Gantry cranes can help to reduce downtime by eliminating the need for workers or forklift operators to manually handle heavy loads. This can help to increase efficiency and reduce the likelihood of production delays.

Gantry cranes are designed to increase productivity in manufacturing facilities. By increasing the speed and efficiency of material handling, they can boost outputs and reduce costs.
