What Is a Gravity Conveyor?

Unlike other types of conveyor systems, a gravity conveyor doesn’t need power because it uses gravity to convey cartons and other lightweight items at a controlled pace on a slight decline, although this type of conveyor can also be designed to handle pallets or other heavier loads.

Gravity conveyors are low maintenance and cost effective. They’re also ideal when a power source isn’t readily available or necessary.

There are several different types of gravity conveyors. Here are some of the most common:

  • Gravity roller conveyors—use rollers to convey items with specific dimensions, such as cartons or plastic totes. Depending on the configuration, can be used to move lighter to heavier items, including pallets.

  • Gravity skatewheel conveyors—use small wheels to flow items quickly. Often used for moving very light items in e-commerce operations.

  • Flexible gravity conveyors—typically uses skatewheels and can be expanded or retracted based on operational needs. Made up of several short, straight sections that are hinged together, which allows them to flex into a curve or fold up for contact storage. Often used in e-commerce operations and for loading trucks.

What’s the Difference Between Gravity and Power Conveyors?

The main difference between these two types of conveyors is how they operate, as well as installation and maintenance costs.

  • Gravity conveyors—don’t need power to convey items. More cost-effective to install and maintain.

  • Power conveyors—require an external power source to move items. Ideal for heavy loads or long distances. Offers more versatility and control over speed and direction of items being conveyed.
