When you are looking at different conveyor systems for your industrial space, you might be confused about some of the terminology used. RMH Systems put together this handy guide to explain some of the more common terminology used when talking about conveyor systems!

Definitions of Conveyor System Terms

Fulfillment Steps

These are the steps that an order must go through in your warehouse in order to go out to the customer and be completed. They might include picking the order, packing the order, and shipping it. A conveyor system can move orders through each step of fulfillment without the effort of your team.

Accumulation Buffers

These are systems put in place to keep the flow on your conveyor systems under control. It is simply a means for preventing backups, such as when pickers are able to pick orders faster than your packing team can manage them. A conveyor system can act as a sort of flow management tool.

Non-Powered Systems

These are the conveyor systems that don’t require electricity or motors to work. They instead rely on human power, gravity, or another force to make them work.

Gravity Conveyors

Gravity conveyors are an example of a non-powered conveyor system. They move packages through your warehouse using gravity, such as from an upper level to a lower one.

Powered Conveyor Systems

These are conveyor systems that use power to move products through fulfillment steps. They might use belts, motors, and other automated systems to move products. They are more expensive than non-powered system but require less effort by the user.

Belt Systems

An example of a powered conveyor system. Belt systems use a wide belt made from rubber or another material to move products along. An example of a belt system would be a people mover in an airport as well as a conveyor in a grocery store checkout line.
