The returns area of any warehouse can become a chaotic mess. Many warehouses end up with shelves that are overflowing with returned merchandise waiting to be processed and simply want to give that area the most space possible in order to evaluate the returned merchandise. Your returns department will need to determine whether your items can be returned to the shelves for purchase, repaired, or taken out of inventory and trashed. That requires a lot of space, so aren’t pallet shelves the right answer for your Chicago warehouse?
It depends. What’s right for your warehouse will depend in large part on the kind of inventory you are dealing with in the returns department. Are people returning pallets of stuff, cartons of things, or individual items? If the answer is pallets, then pallet shelves are perfect for your returns area because they’ll give you the storage capacity you need in a safe environment. If you are dealing with cartons, you’ll want to look at both the size of the cartons and the space your team needs to evaluate the products inside. For individual items, stay away from pallet shelves. Invest in carton flow racks or bins for your shelves to keep the returns area as organized as possible.
