One of the potential drawbacks of powered conveyor systems is that you need, well, power. The system relies on electricity to move the belt of the conveyor and move your products from one area to another. This need may require you to run electrical cables through your warehouse, depending on your setup and where your conveyor system is going to operate, making it considerably more expensive than other conveying options such as an unpowered system. But is it possible to have your conveyor system generate power for other purposes?
What One Australian Company is Doing
According to a recent article on AustralianMining.com, one company is using “kinetic energy from a moving conveyor belt to generate power to run electronic systems within a power station.” The power station gives power to safety systems and monitoring stations for the conveyor system.
“‘We found we could draw energy from a moving belt by attaching an independent generator directly to one of the rollers,’ said Paul Harrison, Global Engineering Manager.” This gave the team the ability to power their monitoring equipment without running more cables or drawing power from other sources.
This is an ingenious way to harness the power of a conveyor system that’s already in place. It’s also an eco-friendly solution; by generating their own power, they don’t have to pull that electricity from other sources which could be damaging to the environment.
